Passing the Turing Test A Bumpy Road Ahead
نویسنده
چکیده
Can a digital computer ever pass the Turing Test? In this paper, we argue that the metaphysical possibility of such a program is not the only concern. Even if we assume a generous variant of the Church-Turing thesis, practical concerns dominate two of today’s most promising approaches: human brain simulation and large-scale cognitive algorithms. We report on recent trends in the field of high-performance computing (HPC), suggesting that hardware failures and energy usage are limiting factors for tomorrow’s supercomputers. In addition, we observe that scaling up digital computers to handle large, unstructured problems appears to necessitate more “brain-like” hardware and software.

Road Departure Avoidance System Based on the Driver Decision Estimator
In this paper a robust road departure avoidance system based on a closed-loop driver decision estimator (DDE) is presented. The main idea is that of incorporating the driver intent in the control of the vehicle. The driver decision estimator computes the vehicle look ahead lateral position based on the driver input and uses this position to establish the risk of road departure. To induce a risk...
متن کاملTuring Test Considered Harmful
Passing the Turing Test is not a sensible goal for Artificial Intelligence. Adherence to Turing's vision from 1950 is now actively harmful to our field. We review problems with Turing's idea, and suggest that, ironically, the very cognitive science that he tried to create must reject his research goal.

h A YEAR AGO, this column contemplated the road ahead for semiconductor-based products that build on basic design, test, process, and device technologies. In late 2011, a workshop on the ‘‘Future of IT and Society’’ presented several broad visions of how societal changes will build on semiconductor-based products and information technology in such contexts as social mobility, healthcare, securi...
متن کاملEncoding Turing Machines into the Deterministic Lambda-Calculus
1. Weakly strategy independent : the image of the encoding is a very small fragment of the λ-calculus, that we call the deterministic λ-calculus Λdet. Essentially, it is the CPS (continuation-passing style) λ-calculus restricted to weak evaluation (i.e., not under abstractions). In Λdet every term has at most one redex, and so all weak strategies collapse into a single deterministic evaluation ...
